Kings XI Punjab - Squad Analysis

Kings XI Punjab have been persistent under-performers in the IPL. Except for the initial season in 2008, and in 2014, the Priety Zinta owned side haven't been able to leave an impression in the tournament. However, they had a fine auction this year and made some fine buys. Yuvraj Singh will be making a comeback to the team, while the Jamaican hard-hitting batsman, Chris Gayle, who was not retained by RCB and had gone unsold twice in the auctions, was finally bought by the Kings XI Punjab.

Earlier, Axar Patel was the only player to be retained by KXIP, while the used their RTM cards for David Miller, Marcus Stoinis and Mohit Sharma. Moreover, the addition of the off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is also set to lead the team in 2018, the Indian batsman, KL Rahul and Australian pacer, Andrew Tye gives a whole better lookout to the team.

Overall, they look like a very balanced unit, and pretty much capable of winning the title as well. The batting department comprises of some world class players in KL Rahul, Aaron Finch, David Miller, Yuvraj Singh, Karun Nair and Manoj Tiwary, who can destroy any bowling line-up on their given day. The addition of Chris Gayle would be a boost to the batting line-up and would be a fine all-round option for the team. As far as it comes to experience, Kings XI Punjab have it in plenty.

They have a compact bowling attack as well, comprising of Andrew Tye, Mohit Sharma, Barinder Sran, Axar Patel, Mujeeb Zadran and Ankit Rajpoot. Yuvraj & Gayle can also chip in with a few overs. Marcus Stoinis will be a very handy all-rounder for the team.

No real weaknesses in the team. All departments look very well fulfilled. However, like majority of the other teams, they will face the same issue of selecting the players to field, and selecting whom to keep on the bench.

Here will be my Playing XI from the squad:

1. KL Rahul (WK)
2. Aaron Finch
3. Karun Nair
4. Yuvraj Singh
5. David Miller
6. Marcus Stoinis
7. Axar Patel
8. Ravichandran Ashwin (Captain)
9. Mohit Sharma
10. Andrew Tye
11. Barinder Sran

Not including Gayle in the side simply because of his inconsistency, plus, you cannot keep a match winner like Aaron Finch out of the team!

Cheers,
Sparsh
