Sunrisers Hyderabad - Squad Analysis

Sunrisers Hyderabad had built a team around their ex-captain, David Warner, but now, after David Warner being banned for an year by Cricket Australia, they do have a few issues to to deal with. SRH, which looked like a very balanced team, seems to have lost its balance with the exit of Warner. Nobody can really replace David Warner's kind of batting at the top of order. He was a highly explosive opener and demolished the opponent single-handedly on his day. SRH seems to be like FC Barcelona without Lionel Messi!

Kane Williamson replaces David Warner as the captain of the team, while Alex Hales has made the squad.

Talking about their strengths at first, they do have loads and loads of all-round options and also quite a many back-up options for each slot. They still do have a fine batting line-up, comprising of two decent openers in Williamson/Hales & Dhawan, which means that if Williamson opens, Dhawan would now have to up his game and score a little quicker, to reduce pressure off Williamson. Middle order looks very decent as well consisting of Manish Pandey, for whom it will be a great opportunity, Wriddhiman Saha, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Nabi and Carlos Brathwaite

They have an excellent fast bowling attack as well, which will be headed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and accompanied by Basil Thampi, Siddharth Kaul, T Natarajan and Sandeep Sharma.

They do have a few wicket-keeping woes, as they have only two keepers in Saha and Shreevats Goswami. Out of the two, ofcourse Saha would make the team, however, his strike rate in T20 cricket is a little concern for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Plus, they do not have a lot of Indian spin-bowling options either. Yes, they do have Bipul Sharma, Deepak Hooda can give you a few overs of off-spin, however they lack a quality Indian spinner, and a lot would depend on Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Shakib Al Hasan.

Here is my Playing XI from the squad:

1. Kane Williamson (Captain)
2. Shikhar Dhawan
3. Manish Pandey
4. Wriddhiman Saha (WK)
5. Shakib Al Hasan
6. Deepak Hooda
7. Mohammad Nabi
8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
9. Rashid Khan
10. Sandeep Sharma
11. Basil Thampi

Yes, you cannot really open with Alex Hales, because if you open with him, you would eventually need to push Saha and Shakib down the order, and also take out Nabi from the team, which would really result in breaking the balance of the team. No place for Yusuf Pathan in the team either, because replacing him with Hooda and playing him at 6, doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Cheers,
Sparsh
